A recent New York Times Op-Ed column by Masaru Tamamoto calls attention to some interesting and contestable points about the state of Japanese society and its ability to thrive given demographic ageing.
A recent New York Times Op-Ed column by Masaru Tamamoto calls attention to some interesting and contestable points about the state of Japanese society and its ability to thrive in the 21st century. After giving a rundown of the sordid state of political affairs and the high rate of depression and suicid among his compatriots, Tamamoto discusses what he sees as an innate inability of Japan to innovate from the ground up; rather the country is very good at individualising borrowed ideas. He then calls for society to move past dated anti-immigrant notions of a "pure Japan" or face succombing to a demographic shift that could overwhelm the island nation.
